The world is under pressure, but optimism persists. A fresh honor originating at the interdisciplinary festival the Starmus festival seeks to inspire the public to make a difference.

The Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will be given in honour of the renowned British primatologist who passed away recently. It seeks to acknowledge individuals and groups that champion life on Earth.

Honoring a Legacy

Initial honorees are slated for announcement during the upcoming Starmus event in Tenerife and La Palma, which will run from October 17th to 22nd the coming year.

It was shared that Jane Goodall, who was a member of the festival's board, had backed the award’s creation. “The vision of having this medal, and Starmus being entrusted with organising it, originated with Jane,” a representative said. “She expressed that she wanted this to happen. This is likely because of the close bond she shared with the festival.”

“The Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal aims to highlight sustainable programmes carried out to build an environment a better place for people, animals and the environment and offer support for the continuation that work,” said a family member.

Format and Inspiration

One of the founders of the festival indicated that the medal – unveiled at a scientific institution – would probably have multiple categories.

“The intent is for it to be modeled after the Stephen Hawking medal honoring scientific outreach established a decade past,” it was explained. Jane Goodall was a recipient of that very medal.

Expressing concern about the future for Earth, one figure said, “Frankly, it's challenging to feel hopeful. The current political climate in one major nation represents an assault on knowledge. This situation undermines global initiatives.”

“Realistically, the situation appears particularly bright so we have to really start reconsidering, with greater urgency regarding the impact of our actions. And that’s not just climate change, that’s the entire manner in which we interact with nature.”

A Call to Action

As a result, observers believe this is an opportune moment to follow her guiding principles. “It is believed that when we’re awarding this medal, we will be considering this essential spirit of Jane’s – which made her foremost concern, to change the way we treat the other animals around us.”

Another key issue today was highlighted of false information. The theme of the upcoming festival is set as “the search for truth”.

“It has become apparent that factual reality has become a subject of discussion where political interests is involved. And it’s a perilous development,” it was said. “Climate research remains a scientific discipline; you cannot allow interference by political agendas in this field.”

Optimism and Resolve

The hope remains that this honor can motivate action. “It’s about motivating others to get involved and to show concern and to strive toward these goals, truly. Regardless of if we feel hopeful, we must look at doing the best we can,” a statement concluded. “Be prepared for setbacks, but you still continue striving to achieve positive outcomes.”

A descendant involved in environmental protection expressed confidence that “with guidance and once enabled, humanity can be conscientious guardians of our planet”, pointing to the initiatives of a foundation which, among its other activities, helps the youth become engaged with their community, animals, and the natural world.

“As Jane Goodall repeatedly reminded us, our daily actions have an impact and the responsibility lies with us what type of impact we make,” it was stated. “It is not too late and this medal will offer support and raise awareness regarding beneficial initiatives currently in progress.”
