Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed outrage after Donald Trump alleged a contingent of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and declared they should be taken into custody and punished "through capital punishment" following their release of a disputed video.
The Content That Provoked the Debate
The video footage, released on earlier this week, includes six Democratic lawmakers who formerly worked in military or security capacities.
"Like us, you all made an vow to defend and defend this founding document," the representatives stated in the brief video. "Currently, the threats to our governing document are not only from overseas, but from domestically. Our laws are unambiguous, you can reject illegal orders, you can reject improper directives, you should reject unlawful commands. No one has to carry out directives that break the law or our national charter."
The Former President's Furious Response
The recorded statement reportedly provoke a furious reaction from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he stated: "This represents really concerning, and Dangerous to our Country. Their statements cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Officials Respond
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, Top Democrats released a combined announcement condemning the statements.
"Political violence has no place in the United States," they stated. "Congress members who were featured in the video all served our country with exceptional patriotism and honor. We strongly censure Donald Trump's disgusting and risky death threats against elected officials, and call on House Republicans to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in touch with protective services "to guarantee the safety of these members and their families."
"Donald Trump must without delay take down these unhinged online messages and recant his violent discourse before he leads to violence," the announcement added.
Lawmakers' Firm Reaction
The lawmakers who appeared in the video also published a response.
"We identify as former service members and security experts who care for this country and swore an pledge to defend and uphold the national charter of the United States," they said. "That oath is permanent, and we aim to honor it. No threat, pressure, or incitement will prevent us from that sacred obligation."
"What's most telling is that the president deems it subject to penalty by execution for us to repeat the legal requirements," they added. "Military personnel should know that we have their protection as they carry out their oath to the founding principles and duty to obey only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They stated: "All citizens must come together and condemn the ex-president's demands for our death and political violence. This is a time for ethical certainty."
Further Governmental Comments
The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's comments and published on social media: "It's important to understand: the former president is requesting the capital punishment of public representatives."
He continued: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, all citizens – regardless of party – should censure this immediately and unconditionally."
The Conservative official defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", labeling the video as "extremely improper", adding: "It is very dangerous, you have leading members of the government instructing soldiers to disobey orders, I think that's unprecedented in US history."
The Conservative representative also allegedly told media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the offense of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to examine the terminology and decide all that."
Executive Branch Statement
During a executive branch meeting on that day, when questioned by a media member, "Would the president want to execute elected officials?", the administration spokesperson responded: "No."
"Let's be clear about what the president is reacting to," the spokesperson declared. "There are active officials of the American legislature who coordinated to arrange a video message to members of the US military, to current military personnel advising them to ignore the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She said: "The sanctity of our armed forces rests on the chain of command, and if that system is compromised, it can lead to people getting killed, it can result in confusion, and that's what these elected officials ... are essentially supporting."
