Eurovision Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – However It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.

A recent term emerged a few months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This term is unique to Gaza, as stated by health professionals including paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is rare for physicians to treat a minor who has lost their entire family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” about the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of young amputees surpasses that of any other region in the world. Nothing normal about scores of doctors arriving back from a devastated terrain with reports of children being deliberately targeted.

An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Supposed Ceasefire

Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and international watchdogs contend that atrocities are ongoing. The Israeli government rejects these accusations, just as it disavows everything it is implicated in. Yet as traumatised orphans are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its declared purpose of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, apparently, is what unity looks like.

Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems completely different.

Contradictory Principles

Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that settler violence and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that foreign reporters are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – almost double the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it once represented. A contest that once promoted harmony has transformed into a cynical way to whitewash war.
