A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and over 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local police are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.

The victims have not yet been formally identified, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the individuals who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message read.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
