Prison Surprise: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Life in Prison

He contested the law and the legal system won.

Two months after getting a quarter-century plus sentence for trying to “destroy” Brazil’s democracy, former president Jair Bolsonaro at last appears headed to prison.

Anticipated Imprisonment

The adjudicated instigator – who has been living under residential detention in his estate while a series of legal procedures and challenges proceed – is widely expected to be jailed in the next few days, during mounting talk that he will be sent to a infamous top-security prison.

Previous Remarks on Prisoners

During Bolsonaro’s four-decade public life, the right-wing ex- paratrooper showed little mercy for the country's inmates.

“For what reason must we give those scoundrels a good life?” he once mused. “They ought to simply be messed, period. That's my view.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro declared: “Unless you desire to end up there, all you have to do is not sexual assault, kidnap or rob.”

Jail Destination Debate

Yet the prospect of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has appalled backers, four of whom this week inspected the prison in an apparent attempt to dissuade the high court from banishing him there.

The senator, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was among that group, said he predicted the elderly figure to be imprisoned in the coming fortnight and worried his destination could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s severe gut problems – the consequence of a near-fatal knife attack during the 2018 presidential election race – signified it would be hazardous to keep the ex-leader there. “His health is extremely serious. He will not be able to cope if they move him to Papuda … It will be dreadful,” he added, who also worried about packed cells and the condition of jail cuisine.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas recalled witnessing cells containing four dozen inmates: “That’s almost one square metre per prisoner.

“We conversed to the convicts and they complain, unsurprisingly, of the terrible meals,” continued the senator.

Supporters Speak Out

Lucas is not the sole person expressing views ahead of the one-time head of state's expected incarceration.

Writing in a major publication, a different supporter, the former cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “harsh” end to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” public service and asserted Brazil was about to witness “the largest wrong in its history”.

“It is an wrong that erodes the souls of many Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Varied General Response

It is possibly accurate due to the substantial following Bolsonaro holds on the Brazilian right. But his anticipated imprisonment has also pleased the hearts of numerous individuals who believe he deserves to be imprisoned for conspiring to block the incoming president from becoming president – and also conspiring to have him killed.

Reimont Otoni, a representative for the sitting president's political party, said: “Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in a dark cell. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be sent in isolation. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We wish him to receive proper treatment – but dignified care behind bars. He must not persist being his own prison warden for his entire life.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro allies, who have long praising the severe treatment of prisoners, had suddenly realized to their entitlements. “Just now has the conservative fringe – which has consistently claimed that basic rights are not for offenders – decided to visit a prison to discover what circumstances are really like,” he said.

“The former president is a offender,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he deserved “humiliating, demeaning treatment”.

Potential Incarceration Conditions

Regardless of rumors that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which currently holds about fourteen thousand prisoners, his more likely destination seems to be a nearby jail for law enforcement and other “particular” prisoners known as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

His potential cell are far more comfortable than those in the main prison, although still a far cry from the comfort Bolsonaro enjoyed while living in the spectacular official residence, around 20 kilometers away.

Based on reports, the accommodation Bolsonaro could likely reside in in Papudinha has about 260 square feet – approximately the size of vehicle spaces – and contains a 12 sq metre restroom with a shower and a 12 square meter terrace. “Bolsonaro would be allowed to have a TV and also a cooler in his room as long as they were donated by his relatives,” information indicated.

Ideological Comments

The lawmaker condemned the rumoured plan to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a type of revenge” on the part of the judicial authority who led Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will determine his future in the {
