Over forty-two million Americans are waiting with bated breath to hear if the Trump administration will use contingency money to supply billions of dollars in nutritional support.

Federal courts issued the White House until Monday noon Eastern Time (17:00 GMT) to give updates about how it plans to fund the SNAP benefits, also known as food assistance.

Financial support for the initiative remains in limbo due to the extended federal closure caused by the inability of lawmakers to agree on a funding deal.

Despite the judges' ruling or alternative solution, countless Americans have gone without critical nutrition support since money for the program ran dry on the weekend.

State Administration and Government Money

Although individual US states administer the benefits, the programme relies on money from the federal government, which has been without budget and shut down since 1 October.

Federal judges in two northeastern states ruled that the USDA needs to employ $5.25 billion (£4bn) in emergency funds to make at least partial payments to Americans on Snap.

The program costs about eight billion dollars per month.

Legal Challenges and Administration Reaction

US President Donald Trump previously said he had instructed government lawyers to ask the judiciary how the government could legally finance Snap, adding: "Although we get immediate guidance, it will unfortunately be delayed."

Sunday, the Treasury Secretary said in a television appearance that the president wanted to receive guidance from the courts about how to legally move money around to fund Snap payments but they could be distributed as soon as mid-week.

"A procedure exists that has to be followed," Bessent said. "So, we've got to figure out what the process is."

Recently, the Department of Agriculture said it will not distribute nutrition support money starting 01 November because of the government shutdown, stating: "The well has run dry."

Lawsuits and State Responses

Numerous states and the District of Columbia filed suit against the government over the assistance suspension and argued that they have a statutory duty to keep the program running in their jurisdictions.

Separately, municipalities and non-profits also filed a lawsuit.

Amid doubts surrounding government nutrition money, several states said they would use their state funds to fund food assistance.

It provides them prepaid cards that they can utilize to buy food.

A household with four members on average receives seven hundred fifteen dollars per month, which breaks down to a little less than $6 per day, per person.
