Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under confinement pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that the former president be allowed to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.

At the time, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the next presidential race.
