The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Star Camara: Starting from Dreams to Tournament Favorites.
When I enter the room, the young midfielder picks up a football he won’t let go of throughout our chat. It’s a powerful symbol for a dream he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His determination and raw talent convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult approval to secure didn't come from a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He didn’t want me playing soccer but it’s because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.
Overcoming Early Hurdles
In time, on “a special day,” he received his dad's approval to chase his path in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.
However, Génération Foot – the club that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the best player in a local competition, Génération Foot were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Season and European Breakthrough
That decision put him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, though tired, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his nation to the title and being named best player.
Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” says the 21-year-old. He resides by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to keep him focused.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Off-field noise aren't a problem for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and superb skills. He is also a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to control his aggression, after being sent off at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit that is following me!” he quips.
Monaco, Mentors and Future Ambitions
At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.
Right now, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.
On a potential transfer to the Premier League, he remains focused on Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he insists. He is often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about targeting the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.
“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley… it instills confidence.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
