Three Lions Coach Shares His Vision: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.
In the past, Anthony Barry was playing at a lower division club. Currently, he's dedicated on helping Thomas Tuchel win the World Cup in the upcoming tournament. The road from athlete to trainer started as an unpaid coach coaching youngsters. He remembers, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he was hooked. He had found his destiny.
Metoric Climb
Barry's progression stands out. Commencing as Paul Cook’s assistant, he established a standing through unique exercises and excellent people skills. His roles at clubs led him to top European clubs, plus he took on roles with national teams with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached big names such as world-class talents. Currently, in the England setup, it’s full-time, the top in his words.
“All begins with a vision … But I’m a believer that passion overcomes challenges. You have the dream and then you plan: ‘What's the process, gradually?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. We have to build a methodical process that allows us to have the best chance.”
Obsession with Details
Dedication, especially with the smallest details, characterizes his journey. Toiling around the clock under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, the coaching duo push hard at comfort zones. Their methods include mental assessments, a strategy for high temperatures ahead of the tournament in North America, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights the national team spirit and avoids language including "pause".
“It's not time off or a rest,” Barry notes. “We needed to create an environment where players are eager to join and where they're challenged that going back is a relief.”
Greedy Coaches
He characterizes himself along with the manager as extremely driven. “We want to dominate every aspect of the game,” he declares. “We want to conquer every metre of the pitch and that’s what we spend long hours toward. We must not just to keep up of changes but to beat them and set new standards. It's an ongoing effort focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.
“We have 50 days with the players ahead of the tournament. We have to play an intricate approach that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. We need to progress from concept to details to know-how to performance.
“To develop a process for effective use during the limited time, we must utilize the whole 500 we’ll have had after our appointment. In the time we don’t have the players, we have to build relationships with them. We must dedicate moments communicating regularly, we need to watch them play, understand them, connect with them. Relying only on those 50 days, it's impossible.”
Upcoming Matches
Barry is preparing for the final pair in the qualifying campaign – facing Serbia at home and away to Albania. England have guaranteed their place at the finals after six consecutive victories without conceding a goal. But there will be no easing off; instead. This period to build on the team's style, to maintain progress.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the style of play must reflect the best aspects of English football,” he comments. “The physicality, the flexibility, the physicality, the honesty. The England jersey needs to be highly competitive yet easy to carry. It ought to be like a superhero's cape instead of heavy armour.
“For it to feel easy, it's crucial to offer a style that allows them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that connects with them and lets them release restrictions. They should overthink less and increase execution.
“There are morale boosts you can get as a coach in the first and final thirds – building from the defense, pressing from the front. But in the middle area of the pitch, those 24 metres, it seems football is static, particularly in the Premier League. All teams are well-prepared currently. They know how to set up – defensive shapes. We are really trying to increase tempo in that central area.”
Passion for Progress
His desire to get better knows no bounds. When he studied for his pro license, he was worried regarding the final talk, since his group featured big names including former players. So, to build his skill set, he entered difficult settings available to him to hone his presentations. One was HMP Walton locally, and he trained detainees for a training session.
Barry graduated with top honors, with his thesis – The Undervalued Set Piece, where he studied numerous set-plays – was published. Lampard included won over and he recruited the coach on to his staff at Stamford Bridge. When Frank was fired, it spoke volumes that the club got rid of most of his staff while keeping Barry.
Lampard’s successor at Stamford Bridge became Tuchel, and, four months later, he and Barry won the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry stayed on under Graham Potter. However, when Tuchel returned in Germany, he recruited Barry of Chelsea to rejoin him. The Football Association consider them a duo similar to Southgate and Holland.
